Descrizione
Anthropomorphic ceremonial axe from the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The head, depicting a woman, is finely carved, while the body is suggested only by the cylindrical form of the handle. The blade projects from the mouth like a tongue, giving the figure a strong sense of assertiveness. The work is part of the Bassani Collection (inv. AFR 00070 2513A).
