Descrizione
Anthropomorphic Gelede society mask from the Yoruba people of Nigeria or the Republic of Benin. “Anthropomorphic Gelede society mask with an elongated oval form, worn on top of the head. The facial features are concentrated within a small area of the mask. The unified, carefully balanced volume is carved with remarkable restraint. The coiffure, subtly indicated by a slight ridge above the forehead, merges naturally with the elegant curve of the profile. Seen from the front, the facial features are contained within two imaginary triangles: the outer one is defined by the volumes of the ears and the small lips; scarification marks appear on the cheeks. Its subdued coloration results from the fading of the white kaolin patina” (quoted from E. Bassani [ed.], Arte dell'Africa Nera, Florence–Milan, Skira, 2000). The work is part of the Bassani Collection (inv. AFR 00044 2513A).
