Statue

Statue from the Baulè people of Côte d'Ivoire. “The enormous beast-like head, with its threatening canines, weighs upon the deformed, contorted yet powerful body of the humanized monkey. The bent legs seem crushed by the weight above, yet also ready to spring into action” (quoted from E. Bassani [ed.], Arte dell'Africa Nera, Florence–Milan, Skira, 2000). The work is part of the Bassani Collection (inv. AFR 00039 2513A).
