Statue

Anthropomorphic statue attributed to the Malinké people (?) of Mali, dating to the 20th century. The figure is depicted standing upright, with a truncated-conical torso and a navel positioned unusually low, at hip level. The legs are spread apart and end in roughly carved feet. Rounded shoulders support unarticulated arms that extend slightly away from the body. The ovoid head features a flat face with a long, straight nose intersecting the brow ridge at a right angle. The work belongs to the Bassani Collection and is housed at MUDEC – Museo delle Culture di Milano (inv. AFR 00002 2513A).
