Descrizione
D’mba mask of the Baga people of Guinea-Bissau, dating to the 20th century. The mask depicts a female figure with simple, massive volumes, characterized by prominent breasts and clearly defined facial features. The composition follows a strict bilateral symmetry, emphasized by the central ridge running from the nose to the crest of the hairstyle, by the braided patterns carved on the head, and by the scarifications on the face and breasts. Two small openings between the breasts allowed the dancer to see while wearing the mask during ritual performances. The surface is further decorated with brass studs of European origin. The work belongs to the Bassani Collection and is housed at MUDEC – Museo delle Culture di Milano (inv. AFR 00001 2513A).
