Statue

Anthropomorphic altar statue attributable to the cultural sphere of the Dogon people (Mali), dating to the 20th century. The figure represents a nommo and is carved directly into the trunk of a tree, whose natural form the sculptor respects and enhances. The face is defined by a perpendicular line of the nose that divides the two semi-elliptical orbital hollows, at the center of which are large, bulging eyes. The work, from the Franco and Laura Monti collection, is today housed at the MUDEC in Milan.
