Photograph of a wooden mask encrusted with mosaic, with openings for the eyes, nostrils, and mouth (inv. no. 4213), Aztec–Mixtec style. The mask belongs to the collections of the Museo Preistorico-Etnografico “L. Pigorini”; the photograph is preserved in the MUCIV Archives, Rome, file M86 – National Gallery of Washington Exhibition. The exhibition referred to in the file is Art of Aztec Mexico: Treasures of Tenochtitlan, held in 1984. In the catalogue, the object is discussed in entry no. 84 (“Mosaic Mask”). The object is also reproduced in color at the opening of the volume (p. 13).
