The photograph shows a mask depicting the god Murcielago, or bat, from the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Monte Alban in the state of Oaxaca. All the parts that make up the mask are detached, like the pendants, and each section is perforated to allow metal segments to pass through them to join them. The mask, in green and blue jade, can be dated between 200 BC and 200 AD.
The photograph is part of the iconographic apparatus of the volume National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico City (1979, p. 41) part of the series Museums of the World published by Mondadori. The texts of the volume were written by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and Licia Collobi.
