Descrizione
The photograph depicts the Gate of the Sun, a monument of the pre-Columbian civilisation of the Tiahuanaco (200-600 AD). The Gate of the Sun is located in the city of Tiwanaku in western Bolivia; it was carved from a single block of andesite on which reliefs were carved, mainly in its cross section. The decoration of the door is characterised by a central relief depicting a frontal deity, possibly the Sun God, surrounded by a theory of forty-eight winged figures (32 with human faces and 16 with bird heads), called “chasquis”, or messengers of God.
