Descrizione
The photograph depicts a portion of the carved decoration in the Gate of the Sun monument of the pre-Columbian civilisation of the Tiahuanaco (200-600 AD). The gate was carved from a single block of andesite on which reliefs were engraved, mainly in its cross section. The decoration is characterised by a central relief depicting a frontal deity, surrounded by a theory of forty-eight winged figures (32 with human faces and 16 with bird heads), called “chasquis”, or messengers of God.
The territory of the Tiahuanaco civilisation extended around the borders of the present-day states of Bolivia, Peru and Chile; the Gate of the Sun is located in the city of Tiwanaku in western Bolivia.
