Photograph of an image of a deity published in Franco Monti’s Terrecotte precolombiane, Fratelli Fabbri Editori, Milan, 1966, p. 36. The photograph is accompanied by the short caption: “God of Fire. Cerro de las Mesas; State of Veracruz, Mexico. Mexico City, Museo Nacional de Antropología” and by a more extensive description: “God of Fire. H. 84 cm. Cerro de las Mesas; State of Veracruz, Mexico. Mexico City, Museo Nacional de Antropología. The representation of this deity is among the oldest in the pre-Columbian world and also frequently appears in stone sculpture; it usually depicts an old man with a face marked by deep wrinkles, carrying on his shoulders or head a vessel serving as a brazier. This is a significant and exceptional example because of its dimensions and the completeness of its composition.”
