The photograph is accompanied by the brief caption: “Urn with modeled figure. Mayapán; State of Yucatán, Mexico. México, Museo Nacional de Antropología” and by a more extended description: “Urn with modeled figure. H. 60 cm. Mayapán; State of Yucatán, Mexico. México, Museo Nacional de Antropología. The figure in relief represents a priest. Numerous urns and censers of this type have been found at Mayapán, the city-state that dominated practically all of Yucatán from the 13th century to the mid-15th century; the treatment is, as always, detailed, with abundant particulars that clearly serve a decorative purpose.”
