Ruins of the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus

Descrizione

Postcard of the ruins of the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, part of the complex of the imperial palace of Blancherne, in the historic center of Istanbul. The photograph appears to be distributed by the photographic studio Sebah-Joallier, based in the city, which specializes in public shots of the ruins of ancient palaces and archaeological sites, as well as portraits of the local population. Cesare Brandi must have purchased the postcard during his visit to Turkey, and on the back of the photo he alludes to his search for images of the local monuments. He writes: "External part of the palace [...] all cluttered with ruins that reach halfway up the columns. I have not found any photographs of the "Bucoleon"", probably referring to the Palace of the Bucoleon, another monument of the city.
