Biografia

Bruna Polimeni (born Amico) is an Italian photographer. In 1962 she moved to Rome and worked for several newspapers, gaining experience as a graphic designer and photographer. In 1969, she began to take an interest in the liberation struggle in the Portuguese colonies and participated as a correspondent for ‘Mondo operaio’, in the International Conference in Khartoum, called in support of the peoples of the Portuguese colonies. She sent photographs of the Conference to the leaders of the liberation movement in Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde, initiating relations that are still ongoing. In Italy, he follows the main events and personalities in the country's public life, particularly in the political and social fields, with continuous reportages. She promoted the publication of a conspicuous photographic collection of Italian newspapers published all over the world, where the emigration of Italian workers and political exiles from the 19th century was directed. Polimeni is sent, as the only Italian photographer, to document the proclamation of independence of Guinea Bissau, which took place on 24 Sep. 1973. Even after Cape Verde's independence (1975), she continued to follow the country's political and administrative events. In 2006, in recognition of her work during the liberation struggle for the independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde, she was awarded with the Amílcar Cabral medal, the highest civilian decoration in that country, by the government of Cape Verde.
