Biografia

Carlo Alberto Pinelli, born in Turin on 6 July 1935, graduated in Literature and History of Indian and Central Asian Art at the Sapienza University of Rome.

Son of playwright and screenwriter Tullio Pinelli, and married to Anna Giolitti, he participated in his youth in archaeological excavations and surveys in Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, under the guidance of Professors Giuseppe Tucci and Salvatore Puglisi.

He served for several years as assistant in the Chair of History of Indian Art at the Sapienza University of Rome. He collaborated with Professor Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli on the editorial work of the Enciclopedia dell’Arte Antica, published by the Treccani.

He still occasionally gives lectures and seminars on Buddhist art of Gandhara at cultural institutions and museums. In 1978, the University of Salerno, Faculty of Education, granted Pinelli the academic qualification of “subject expert” (cultore della materia) for the teaching of Cultural Anthropology at university level.
